Rita Figus is a Luxembourg-based contemporary artist whose work explores the shifting boundary between abstraction and recognition. Through layered painting, material, gesture and traces of emerging forms, her works examine how fragments become images — and how perception, memory and personal experience shape what we believe we see.

 

Working primarily with acrylics, pigments and mixed materials, she develops her paintings through an intuitive process of layering, transformation and discovery. Forms emerge, dissolve and reappear, often suggesting landscapes, fragments of architecture or organic structures without settling into a fixed interpretation.

Her artistic practice is rooted in a fascination with the relationship between our inner and outer worlds. Each painting develops through a dialogue between spontaneous gestures and conscious decisions, between allowing things to happen and searching for a sense of balance.​

Rather than presenting a single reality, her works invite viewers to explore how perception, memory and personal experience influence what they recognise. An image may carry one meaning for the artist and evoke an entirely different story for someone encountering it.

The painting does not give the viewer an answer. It creates a space in which their own interpretation can emerge.
